No Mud, no Lotus
We are almost halfway through the year, for me it seems to have whizzed by! How about you? Have you felt like you're on top of things this year so far, or have you perhaps felt like you're barely keeping your head above water?
Either way, there really is no good or bad here, just to be aware of what is. Because although we can plan, dream, create and be disciplined in our endeavors, sometimes shit happens! We cannot control the actions of others, global events, accidents or ignore work or family responsibilities. This is life. We've simply got to play the hand we are dealt. The path of Yoga teaches us to be able to handle our daily affairs and challenges with a little more ease and grace, it's certainly not about retreating into a cave and separating ourselves from society (or our problems).
Practice really invites us to merge more deeply into our lives. To see with a kind of clarity that draws you right in to the heart of the human experience. To feel our own emotions, see our own patterns, habits, difficulties, desires, needs, and not immediately turn away, to bear witness of our struggles, sit with our shadows and love them too. As we hold ourselves with more care and compassion, we can then see and feel this for others.
Understanding grows. Limiting opinions and judgements of others begin to soften.
Most of you have heard the phrase; No Mud, no Lotus. This metaphor teaches us that joy and personal growth arise from facing and transforming our suffering. Just as a lotus flower cannot bloom without mud, humans cannot experience true happiness without acknowledging and working through the challenges and pain in life.
By practicing mindfulness, deep breathing, and concentration, we can embrace pain without being overwhelmed, allowing it to become a source of insight, resilience, and inner peace. Conscious engagement with suffering reduces its negative impact.
And this is why I practice. Not to appear Spiritual or 'good', but simply because my own life has been profoundly impacted. I am not the same person I was 10 years, or even 2 years ago. With every hurdle, whether it be a bump or a mountain, each step, every experience, both positive and negative has pulled me closer to my core, my heart. And from the heart, we shift more towards what Ram Dass called, loving awareness.
Our lives are not simply shaped by a single force or 'destiny' or even 'karma', it is shaped by many forces, working together, all the time, constantly shifting and changing. We do not experience life as it is, we experience it through the lens of who we are, so changing from the inside determines what you see on the outside. You have tools available to you, you then need to take action, and as you learn and grow, the qualities of your consciousness evolve, thus creating different outcomes.
You may have heard of the 3 Gunas; Rajas, Tamas, Sattva. These qualities are always at play, our inner states, driving and shaping the way in which we operate and how see the world.
Tamas - Avoidance, blame. One experience becomes permanent truth, questioning stops, nuance is diminished.
Rajas - Desire, chasing. Always comparing, measuring, never enough, never arriving.
Sattva - Alignment, one takes full responsibility yet remains rooted within. No comparison, no competition. Connection instead of separation. Seeing clearly.
So taking all of the above into consideration, how are you living your life? What is the quality of your consciousness? Through engaging with these practices of Asana, breath, Meditation, philosophy and sharing through community, we have the opportunity to awaken, bringing a deeper awareness into our ordinary, everyday lives, and this, is where the real power of change lies.
My wish for us all is that we see each other more kindly, clearly, and through our deeper understanding, we can remain hopeful and aligned to a world where there is more care, considerate solutions, abundance and for which we are proud to leave to those that come after us.
I see you, I offer you peace, love and courage xxx
